People often ask me what antitheft devices work the best..

They already know car alarms don't work. Even the fancy "starter kill", 2-way-paging alarms are often easily defeated by thieves.

You already know vehicle tracking is great for recovering whatever is left of your vehicle that the thieves didn't want.

Vehicle immobilizers can be divided into 2 main categories:

• Physical Immobilizers, such as steering wheel locks ("The Club"), brake locks & extremely inconvenient-to-use tire locks ("Wheel Boots").
• And Electro-Mechanical Immobilizers, including transponder FOB's that come factory-installed by many manufacturers today.

As you are probably already aware, car thieves routinely defeat Physical Immobilizers. How? You guessed it... physically. They saw through the steering wheel to remove the steering wheel locks. They figure out how to crack the immobilizer, sometimes by freezing then smashing it. Or they get a device tow truck drivers use called a "club buster".

The Electro-Mechanical Immobilizers are a little bit tougher for amateurs, but many are easily defeated without the thief needing to leave the cab of the vehicle. The best Electro-Mechanical Immobilizers require the thief to get out & open the hood to defeat. But when these are factory installed, professional thieves & networks of thieves have INCREDIBLE INCENTIVE TO BEAT THEM, because once they've beaten it once, they know how to beat it every time.
